THE CAUSEAll proceeds raised by these activities will be donated to TEAR Australia, a registered Christian charitable organization (donations are tax deductible). In seeking a secular cause relevant to students at UTS, we have nominated that funds raised by the Back 2 School initiative be directed towards Village Leap Schools in Southern Pakistan. Most villages in the Sindh province in Southern Pakistan do not have their own primary school, so students have to travel to the regional centres each day to attend over-crowded and under-resourced classes. For most children from the villages, it’s just not worth the travel. The LEAP project seeks to address the issue of distance and quality of education by helping communities establish their own village schools. The village is responsible for much of the school’s management, including building a hut for the school, selecting a person to become the trained volunteer teacher, and starting up an income generation scheme. The project will cover the set up costs for the school and train the teacher, but the community does the rest. Part of the LEAP project’s work is to encourage the government to register the Village LEAP schools so they can receive government funding, and possibly become government schools in the future.
ABOUT TEARTEAR (Transformation, Empowerment, Advocacy, Relief) Australia is a Christian organisation responding to the needs of poor communities around the world by informing and empowering people to respond to the suffering and oppressed communities.
